A bipartisan effort has emerged in the U.S. Congress with Representatives Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) jointly proposing the Pakistan Democracy Act. This legislative initiative is designed to bolster democratic processes, safeguard human rights, and reinforce the rule of law within Pakistan. The introduction of this bill comes in the wake of the disputed February 2024 elections and persistent anxieties regarding the military’s involvement in civilian governance.

Representative Wilson emphasized that the United States’ relationship with Pakistan is most robust when Pakistan adheres to its democratic principles. He highlighted the global context of the conflict stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, underscoring the necessity to champion democracy and human rights worldwide, including in Pakistan.
