Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that Pakistan would continue to render strong and abiding support for multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in global affairs. He was talking to Ambassador Olara Otunnu, the candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, who called on him in Islamabad today. Ambassador Olara Otunnu was accompanied by Ruhakana Rugunda, the Special Envoy of the President of Uganda and former Prime Minister of Uganda. During the meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter. He also underscored the need for ensuring respect for international law and international treaties. The Prime Minister expressed the hope that the next Secretary-General of the United Nations would continue to focus on the three pillars of the United Nations-peace and security, development, and human rights – in an interconnected and balanced manner. The candidate for the position of the UN Secretary-General Ambassador Otunnu expressed his profound gratitude for Pakistan’s enduring contributions to multilateralism as well as towards all three pillars of the United Nations. He appreciated Pakistan’s leadership for playing a key role in the ongoing efforts for international peace and security. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch were also present in the meeting.
