Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasised the need for united efforts to protect Pakistan’s mountains and glaciers, calling them vital to the country’s environment and water security. In his message on International Mountain Day, observed on December 11, the prime minister noted that this year’s theme — “The Critical Role of Mountain Glaciers in Water, Food and Livelihoods” — carries particular importance for Pakistan due to its unique landscape and vast natural resources. Shehbaz highlighted that Pakistan is home to the world’s highest mountain ranges — the Karakoram, Himalayas and Hindu Kush — and hosts over 7,000 glaciers, including Siachen, Baltoro, Biafo and Batura. These glaciers, he said, serve as the backbone of the country’s water system, feeding the Indus Basin, supporting agriculture, powering hydropower generation and supplying drinking water to millions from the north to the south. He warned, however, that these vital resources are under threat from rapid glacier melt, climate change, GLOF events and environmental degradation — all of which pose risks to water security, food systems, biodiversity and mountain-dependent livelihoods. The prime minister called for renewed commitment to safeguarding fragile mountain ecosystems through coordinated climate-resilient strategies, sustainable land use, responsible tourism and involvement of local communities. He also acknowledged the efforts of national bodies, environmental groups and tourism organisations for promoting awareness and conservation of Pakistan’s mountain regions. Emphasizing the importance of mountain communities, he said local populations, who are custodians of a rich cultural and historical heritage, must remain at the heart of conservation efforts. On the occasion of International Mountain Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif particularly called upon the youth to become ambassadors of environmental protection. He stressed the need for joint efforts to ensure that Pakistan’s majestic mountains and breathtaking glaciers are preserved for future generations in their full natural glory.
