Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says the government is committed to protect freedom of press and provide a safe environment to journalists.In a message on the International Day to end impunity for Crimes against Journalists, being observed today, he said independent journalism is the guarantee of a strong, transparent and democratic Pakistan. The Prime Minister expressed the government’s resolve to take all measures to ensure effective investigation into crimes against journalists, provision of justice, and legal action against the perpetrators of these crimes. The Prime Minister also urged the international community, media institutions and civil society to play their role in protecting journalists and promoting freedom of expression. He said, this day reminds us of the fact that free, informed and responsible journalism is the foundation of any democratic society. Shehbaz Sharif said journalists enable public access to facts and are the torchbearers of truth. He said crimes based on violence, intimidation or retaliation against journalists while performing professional duties are in fact an attack on freedom of expression. He paid tribute to all those journalists who have faced hardships for the sake of truth and honesty. The Prime Minister also expressed his solidarity with the families of those writers and media workers who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
