Explosion at Peshawar CTD police station leaves one cop martyred, two injured

A Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officer was martyred and two others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a CTD police station in Peshawar on Sunday. According to Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed, the initial investigation indicates that the blast originated in the station’s armoury, likely triggered by a short circuit that ignited old explosives stored at the site. “The explosion seems to have occurred when decades-old explosive material in the armoury detonated,” the CCPO stated. He added that the resulting fire spread rapidly, setting off further explosions as additional munitions caught fire. The impact caused part of the building to collapse, leading to the martyrdom of one CTD officer and injuring two others. “All detainees have been safely evacuated from the lock-up,” Saeed confirmed, noting that the incident does not appear to be an act of terrorism. Soon after the explosion, police and rescue teams rushed to the scene. The Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), Rescue 1122, and fire brigade personnel began a joint operation to extinguish the fire and clear the area of remaining explosives. “The clearance operation is still underway,” CCPO Saeed added. KP IGP Zulfikar Ahmed has taken notice of the incident and directed the Additional IGP CTD to submit a detailed report within five days, the police spokesperson said. Meanwhile, a special CTD investigation team visited the site to investigate the incident and collect forensic evidence. “The special investigation unit, led by SSP CTD, is on-site and has gathered initial evidence,” said police officials. Teams from the BDU and CTD were also present, assisting in collecting materials from the debris. “We are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to determine the sequence of events,” police said. Statements from police personnel who were inside the station at the time of the blast are also being recorded.
