A meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US President Donald Trump is under way at the White House. Before the meeting, President Trump praised PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir as “great” individuals during a media interaction. The meeting will remain closed to the press. Earlier, a tweet by the Government of Pakistan read, “Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was given a red carpet welcome as he arrived in Washington, D.C. along with a Pakistani delegation to meet the United States President Donald J. Trump. The Prime Minister will reach the White House shortly and will meet US President Donald J. Trump. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will accompany the Prime Minister.” US-Pakistan ties have warmed in recent months under Trump after Washington had for years viewed Pakistan’s rival India as a counter to China’s influence in Asia.
