Former World Cup-winning Australia captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL), following an injury-riddled season with the Melbourne Renegades. Speaking to the local Australian media outlet ahead of the Renegades’ BBL 13 clash against Hobart Hurricanes, Finch stated that it was time for him to say goodbye to cricket in Australia. “I’m just getting old! When you look around the competition and our side in particular, there are some great young players coming through,” he said. “I think now is the right time.” “I think there’s always a little part of that (injury) as you get a little bit older but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a little bit as well. “I wanted to give it as good a crack as I could this year. It’s all good, I’m happy.” Meanwhile, Aaron Finch is hopeful to be fit enough to play his farewell BBL game in the home derby against the Melbourne Stars next Saturday. He scored 3311 runs for the Renegades, the second-highest in the history of BBL, only behind Chris Lynn. Last year in February, Aaron Finch also bid adieu to international cricket, ending his 12-year career as one of the most prolific run scorers in limited-overs formats. He was part of the Australia’s squad that won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2015 and six years later led his side to their maiden T20 World Cup title. Aaron Finch represented Australia in all three formats amid his decade-long international cricket but it was white-ball cricket particularly where he made his mark. He scored 8804 runs in his 264 international appearances with the help of 19 hundreds and 51 half-centuries.
