Sri Lanka softens its stance on China port metropolis deal


Sri Lanka’s new authorities stated it’d renegotiate a $1.5 billion “port metropolis” cope with China Communications Building Co Ltd, softening its pre-election menace to scrap the venture.

New Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, earlier than final month’s presidential vote, stated he would cancel the port deal if his celebration got here to energy. Maithripala Sirisena, backed by Wickremesinghe’s celebration, unseated ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa on the polls.

“We will renegotiate with China after reassessing the deal,” Cupboard Spokesman Rajitha Senarathne instructed reporters.

“We have to see the feasibility examine. We have to see the environmental influence evaluation (EIA) and reassess the tax concessions given to it and land possession points.”

He stated the present authorities had not seen any EIA or feasibility examine of the venture and it wanted to be re-assessed due to impacts on coastal erosion.

Work has already begun on building of the port metropolis, launched by Chinese language President Xi Jinping when he visited in September final 12 months.
