{"id":5510,"date":"2023-03-23T10:08:33","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T10:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diplomacypakistan.com\/?p=5510"},"modified":"2023-03-23T10:08:33","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T10:08:33","slug":"marriyum-aurangzeb-endorses-ecps-decision-to-delay-punjab-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diplomacypakistan.com\/?p=5510","title":{"rendered":"Marriyum Aurangzeb endorses ECP\u2019s decision to delay Punjab polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday reacting to a surprise development by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to axe the Punjab Assembly elections by more than five months, said postponing elections is in the country\u2019s interest.<br \/>\nIn a statement, Marriyum said the electoral supervisor is obligated to guarantee free, impartial, and transparent elections, as per Article 218 of the Constitution, adding that it also states that caretaker setups must be in place at both the central and provincial levels during the elections.<br \/>\nMarriyum pointed out that in the present situation, where governments have already been formed in two provinces, any elections held in those two provinces would have been highly contentious.<br \/>\nShe went on to say a population census is going on in the country. It is not possible to hold elections before the completion of the census.<br \/>\nThe info minister said that it is not possible to impose elections on two provinces on the whims of a man.
