{"id":4370,"date":"2023-01-22T06:19:27","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T06:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diplomacypakistan.com\/?p=4370"},"modified":"2023-01-22T06:19:27","modified_gmt":"2023-01-22T06:19:27","slug":"brazils-president-fires-army-chief-in-wake-of-pro-bolsonaro-riots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diplomacypakistan.com\/?p=4370","title":{"rendered":"Brazil\u2019s President fires army chief in wake of pro-Bolsonaro riots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil\u2019s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has dismissed the country\u2019s army chief General Julio Cesar de Arruda in the wake of the storming of several government buildings by the supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.<br \/>\nAccording to international media reports, Lula did not immediately release a statement on the replacement, but the official website of the Brazilian armed forces said General Julio Cesar de Arruda had been removed as head of the army.<br \/>\nArruda was replaced by General Tomas Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who had been head of the Southeast Military Command.<br \/>\nThe move comes weeks after supporters of Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia on January 8. Rioters had called for the military to intervene to overturn Bolsonaro\u2019s loss to Lula in the presidential election.<br \/>\nIn the immediate aftermath of the riots, Lula said he suspected collusion by \u201cpeople in the armed forces\u201d.<br \/>\nMore recently, the left-wing Brazilian leader said that his government would purge hardcore Bolsonaro loyalists from the security forces. He also removed several dozen soldiers from his security detail following the unrest.<br \/>\nTo date, more than 2,000 people have been arrested in connection with the riots.
