China\u2019s military says it has conducted \u201cstrike drills\u201d in the sea and airspace around Taiwan in response to what it says is provocation from the democratically governed island and the United States.
\nAccording to international media reports, Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, said the drills on Sunday showed Beijing was attacking regional peace and trying to cow Taiwan\u2019s people.
\nIn a brief statement, the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese army said it had carried out \u201cjoint combat readiness patrols and joint firepower strike drills\u201d around Taiwan. It did not specify the exact location.
\n\u201cThis is a resolute response to the current escalation of collusion and provocation from the United States and Taiwan,\u201d it said without giving details.
\n\u201cTheatre forces will take all necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,\u201d it added.
\nTaiwan\u2019s defence ministry said China\u2019s actions \u201conce again highlight its mentality of resolving differences by force and destroying regional peace and stability\u201d.
\n\u201cThe Chinese Communist\u2019s \u2018military intimidation\u2019 acts are obviously aimed at cowing our people and are not conducive to [China\u2019s] international image,\u201d it said, adding that Taiwan will continue to boost its military.
