The White House has welcomed Pakistan\u2019s decision to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, describing it as a recognition of his diplomatic efforts during a critical period in South Asia. At a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the nomination, stating that Pakistan had acknowledged Trump\u2019s role in helping to defuse a potentially catastrophic military standoff between India and Pakistan. \u201cThis nomination reflects Pakistan\u2019s recognition of President Trump\u2019s decisive diplomatic intervention to prevent a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan,\u201d Leavitt said. She also highlighted Trump\u2019s broader diplomatic achievements in recent years. Islamabad formally recommended Trump for the prestigious prize following his involvement in resolving tensions during the Pakistan-India military crisis that began on May 6, 2025. According to reports, a letter of nomination was sent to the Nobel Committee in Norway. Trump has also been nominated separately by a Republican member of the U.S. Congress, who credited him with helping to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Iran. It\u2019s not the first time Trump has linked his diplomatic actions to the Nobel Prize. During his presidency, he had openly said he deserved the honour for helping avoid a war between India and Pakistan. But, in typical Trump fashion, he added, “They won\u2019t give it to me \u2014 the Nobel is only for liberals.” Pakistan launched a large-scale retaliatory military action \u2014 Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos\u2014 and targeted several Indian military targets across multiple regions in response to New Delhi’s multiple unprovoked missile strikes on its soil. Pakistan downed six IAF fighter jets, including three Rafale, and dozens of drones. After at least 87 hours, the war between the two nuclear-armed nations ended on May 10 with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States.
