Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Egypt on Sunday to participate in the Sharm El Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit (SCIS).
\nPM Shehbaz was received at the international airport of Sharm El Sheikh by Egypt\u2019s senior officials and the officers of the Pakistani embassy. The prime minister was accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, cabinet members and other senior officials.
\nBefore departing, PM Shehbaz warned that turning a blind eye to climate change\u2019s lethal effects would be \u201ccriminal\u201d.
\nHe also asked for \u201cclimate justice\u201d, urging the world to financially support \u201cdeveloping countries\u201d so that they could reduce the \u201cmultifarious threats of climate change\u201d.
\nThe premier added that according to the country\u2019s Post-Disaster Needs Assessment, Pakistan\u2019s recovery from flood devastation can be held back by \u201cpublic debt, rising international energy and food prices, and lack of access to adaption funds\u201d.
\nThis two-day summit, which begins on Monday, is a part of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).
\nAt the invitation of the Egyptian presidency of COP27, the prime minister will co-chair \u2014 along with his Norwegian counterpart \u2014 a high-level roundtable discussion on \u201cClimate change and the sustainability of vulnerable communities\u201d on Nov 8, said a press release from the Prime Minister\u2019s Office.
\nThe premier will also participate in other high-level events as a speaker; including the UN secretary general\u2019s roundtable to launch the \u201cEarly Warning Systems for Executive Action Plan\u201d and the \u201cMiddle East Green Initiative Summit\u201d on Nov 7, being hosted by Saudi Arabia Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammad bin Salman.
