Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government of trying to hack into senior opposition politicians\u2019 mobile phones, after they reported receiving warning messages from Apple. Some of the lawmakers shared screenshots on social media of a notification quoting the iPhone manufacturer as saying: \u201cApple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID\u201d. \u201cHack us all you want,\u201d Mr Gandhi told a news conference in New Delhi, in reference to Modi. \u201cBut we (opposition) will not stop questioning you.\u201d \u201cWe are not scared. You can do as much [phone] tapping as you want, I don\u2019t care. If you want to take my phone, I will give it to you,\u201d Mr Gandhi added. Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed concern at the lawmakers\u2019 statements and said the government had asked Apple to join its investigation into the matter. The company said it did not attribute the threat notifications to \u201cany specific state-sponsored attacker\u201d. State-sponsored attacks were evolving over time. Detecting them \u201crelies on threat intelligence signals that are often imperfect and incomplete,\u201d it said. \u201cIt\u2019s possible that some Apple threat notifications may be false alarms, or that some attacks are not detected,\u201d Jairam Ramesh, spokesperson for Gandhi\u2019s Congress party, called Apple\u2019s clarification a \u201clong-winded non-denial\u201d of a security breach. The government has declined to reply to questions whether India or any of its state agencies had purchased Pegasus spyware for surveillance.
