German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier plans to travel to the United States from October 30 to November 1 to mark the end of the year of US-German friendship, an initiative meant to celebrate the ties between the two countries.

A meeting with US President Donald Trump is not foreseen. It would be the second time in about one year that Steinmeier has travelled to the US without meeting Trump.

Steinmeier is a former foreign minister who now holds the largely ceremonial post of German head of state. Chancellor Angela Merkel leads the German government.

His trip to the north-eastern city of Boston will come 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and is also meant to recall the US contribution to Germany’s peaceful reunification, Steinmeier’s office said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Steinmeier will be accompanied by his wife Elke Buedenbender.

Their schedule includes a concert by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the reopening of the Goethe Institute cultural centre in Boston, and discussions on digitalization and populism.

Steinmeier visited the West Coast cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco in June 2018.
