Templin, Germany (dpa) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel paid her final respects to her mom, Herlind Kasner, at a funeral service in Templin, in north-eastern Germany, on Thursday.
The funeral service for Kasner, who died on the age of 90 on April 6, was attended by family members, friends and associates, many of whom laid white or pink roses on the coffin.
Kasner was a widely known figure in Templin, a town of some 16,000 residents within the state of Brandenburg, 70 kilometres to the north of Berlin, giving classes in English and Latin on the native grownup training institute till the final.
Following services within the city’s Mary Magdalene Church, the burial was to happen with solely family members and close friends current on the local cemetery, the place her husband, Horst, a Protestant pastor, was buried in 2011.
The family left Hamburg in West Germany for communist East Germany in 1954, transferring to Templin in 1957, the place Merkel and her two siblings grew up. The chancellor is an honorary citizen of the town, the place she maintains a weekend retreat.
