Frankfurt (dpa) – The German daily Frankfurter Rundschau comments on the security zone in northern Syria suggested by German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
In an editorial in its weekend edition, the paper writes, in part:
“That was to be expected: the German defence minister’s suggestion calling for a security zone in northern Syria was ‘dead on arrival’ as the Americans would say.
“When it arrived at NATO headquarters all officials could do was to determine the project’s demise.
“Although Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer tried to convince her NATO counterparts of the merits of the suggested security zone, reaction was lukewarm at best. No country was fully behind her proposal.
“This much is clear: There will be no protection zone on the Syrian-Turkish border anytime soon. There are too many, too difficult obstacles.”
